SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS

Speech sound disorders is an umbrella term referring to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments. There could be one sound in error, or multiple sounds that impact the ability to understand the child. Speech sound errors can be structural in nature, such as differences in the anatomy of the speaker's lips, tongue, and mouth. They can also be related to the way the brain sequences motor movements to create sounds. Some speech sound disorders have no known cause, but treatment is still possible.
